Derby Winner’s Times – where is evolution when you want it?
We all know how evolution works – selection pressure on a population that has heritable variation. We also know how modern knowledge of training, nutrition, drugs and so on has allowed athletes to run faster. You may also be aware of the vast amounts of money that is at stake on the Derby. Put it all together and here you have an example of intense selection pressure combined with unlimited resources with one aim – to make a horse that runs faster. You only have to look at the Stud Fees associated with the breeding of winners to see how owners believe in heritability of “fitness”. So why aren’t the winning times of either the Epsom or Kentucky Derby improving? Has evolution stopped for the last fifty years?
Evolution probably “stopped” 2000 years ago.
We know that people, especially kings and nobles, have been breeding race horses since at leats the middle bronze age, 4000 years ago. And these people also had unlimited money.
As a result the optimal genetic makeup for a fast horse was almost certainly achieved by 2000 years ago. And that selection for optimal existing gnes is the fast process in evolution.
The only way horses are going to get faster then they were 2000 years ago is if truly novel genes arise as a result of mutation, and thatis staggeringly rare. We wouldn’t expect more than one such gene to arise anywhere in the world in any given century.
So we’re now in the slow phas eof evolutionary selection: the development of genetic novelty. Be prepared for along wait.
It is far faster to imprve a trait in an esentially random propulation than to try to improve a trait in a population that has already been hevaily and exclusively selected for that trait.

Ideas for an Elementary School running program?
My son’s elementary school has a running program where the kids run laps during recess and have a laminated card punched after each lap. The goal was overall fitness, and 1/5th of the school ran 26.2 miles over the year. 11 ran over 100 miles (two of those over 200 miles).
We want to improve the overall program – so I appreciate ideas.
We also want to get some free swag for the kids from running or other companies — specifically t-shirts for all and shoes for less advantaged kids. Any ideas here are appreciated as well.
Right now the program recognizes kids with medals for each 26.2 (different one) and a trophy for 100 miles. There is also a paper thermometer on the wall with milage increments and the kids names on paper feet at the appropriate level.
Why not have a fund raiser where the kids can go around and ask neighbors/friends to sponser them say 10 cents a lap. At the end of the fundrasier (have it go for a month?) the money raised will go towards shoes, shirts, running gear, ect for all involved and awards can go to the kids who ran the most, the kids who raised the most, etc. That way you’re also getting the community involved! Then other fun things- have a teacher(s) that will do something crazy if they reach a certain goal- shave their head, wear a crazy outfit to school, etc. Kids eat that up! Hope that helps!

Healthy, cheap and easy lunch ideas?
I have little time to prepare in the mornings, nothing too expensive :S I’m still a student and I need it to be healthy. I used to buy processed turkey slices but I don’t know if that’s healthy for you, I also showered those sandwiches with mayonnaise so it got very soggy by lunch time. I’ve been to a few sites they always recommend chicken breast to put in your sandwiches but I don’t know where/how to buy healthy precooked chicken breast to put in my sandwiches?
I posted it in the diet&fitness section :S
Healthy Chicken Taco
I buy the little cans of diced chicken and drain them, then use. You could carry a whole wheat tortilla/wrap and add the chicken, heat up in a microwave for 30 sec’s-1 min. Add lettuce and salsa.

fitness lessons plans

When I start teach reading I plan my lesson around a couple of phonics sounds and just let it build from there. When I use groups in the classroom I try and arrange it so there is at least one good reader in each group and they can help the other students.
Usually when the students start to learn to read they are all at different levels, so it is very difficult to use the one size fits all model that most schools like to use. Also I like the Montessori approach to learning to read as the students are grouped in different ages groups: like 3 – 6 and 6 – 9 year olds all grouped together.
Montessori used sandpaper letters and these help to cement the words in the child’s mind. With the different age groups the older students teach the younger ones and this really helps plant reading in the older student.
As has been said before ‘If you want to learn a topic then teach it.’
When I first start teaching reading I pick some phonic sounds from the list, make up a word with sandpaper letters that contains the phonics sound. Then I get the students to trace the word in the sandpaper letters while saying it out loud.
After they can all say the word I find another word with the same phonic sound and start the process again. For example cat, hat, mat and bat. After I have been through all the words I put the letters they know on the floor and ask them to make up the word I say. I say ‘cat ‘ and then see what happens. Kids love playing so let them.

How long does it take for the body to start losing fitness shape?
I recently hyperextended my knee while playing soccer, and I just wanted to know how many days I can take off, to let my knee heal a little, without losing my shape. I have been getting in shape since the first day of my summer vacation, for my senior year in high school soccer. Tryouts are just 7 days away and our first game is just 14 days away. My knee really doesn’t bother me while im playing but when i wake up the next morning it is really sore. I have been constantly using the RICE method and our trainer is out of town, can someone please help thank you.
only three days, but you’ll be fine taking a week or so off before actually noticing a difference on the field.

How to cancel LA Fitness membership in a legal letter???
I bought a Pro Results personal training contract at LA Fitness. They Gave me a 5 day guarantee that i could cancel it in. The catch is that the contract says i have to mail a letter to the Home Base of La fitness in Irvine, CA.
As long as the letter is post marked before midnight of of the 5th day, is it still legally inside the 5 guarantee???
Also, I read online that La fitness often claims to never receive these letters form members and ignores them. What can I do to ensure they don’t try to pull this on me?
And lastly, exactly what do i have to write in the letter in terms of information. And should I threaten to get my lawyer involved etc to get them the cancel it on time??
since they are asking letters from members you do not have to write a letter as if you were an attorney. just state, name, address, club location (city and address), membership number, date you signed, and that you want to cancel. date the letter, heck you can even get a member to witness you siging the letter and placing in evelope and closing. just get their name and add to letter, not required. have the letter stamped at post office and keep calling them daily.
