How can I get fit with long hours at work and travelling a lot?

I am a (female) heavy equipment operator. I sit all day in a machine, climb out every now and then. I drink a lot of coffee and have snacks to keep me going at work. I work 10 – 13 hour days and when I go back to my hotel, I don’t feel like working out one bit, in fact I get a lot of carb rich foods and watch tv and veg out. I used to be in shape but I don’t know how to get motivated and also have an exercise routine after being so tired when work is finished and also having to be on the road all the time. Is there anyone in this situation who’s had success with fitness??

Your problem has nothing to do with fitness. It has to do with work-life balancing. You are not happy because there is not enough time in your life related to your needs other than obtaining money to live. Any exercise program you have has to address those needs first. It has to be something you would do anyway even if you did not want to get fit.

If you are in a machine all day, maybe you need some time with other people. Perhaps a group fitness class. There are many of these types of classes like dance, cardio, stretching, etc which will allow you to meet and interact with people at the same time you are getting fit.

This may not fit you, but keep in mind one thing. The motivation needs to be natural. If you find yourself stressing over whether or not to exercise, then you are doing the wrong thing. Finding the one thing that you enjoy even without the fitness component is the key.
