Why are fencing clubs so ageist?

I have a friend who wishes to increase his fitness levels and decided to take up fencing. However, because he is 57 he gets looked down and treated as a geriatric. It is a shame clubs turn away people who are genuinely interested in a sport and look no further than their age, not what they actually do. If anyone knows of a fencing club in Manchester that does not discriminate please let me know..

That’s such a pity that he got turned away for his age. I fence on the west coast of the US, and since the fencing scene is not very competitive there, we get people of all ages fencing side by side. Sometimes the competitiveness of the sport gets in the way of the sport itself, and when that happens one needs to reevaluate why they are fencing in the first place. Kudoes to him for trying, though. Doing a regular exercise is the best way to keep yourself healthy, if you are in your 30s, 20s or even teens. The fitness augments your body’s ability to do more work during leisure time. Your body’s capacity to do work, endure stresses and perform tasks in certain circumstances that stretch you thin.

It focuses totally on the body, lungs, heart, muscles and many other organs. Your fitness depends on you capacity, physical limitations and also your lifestyles like your daily habits and your eating habits.

There are many components of fitness. There is the body’s ability to maintain and supply nutrients and oxygen for an extended period of time. There is also strength, the ability of muscles to sustain the force exerted for a long period of time. Also, there is flexibility, the ability to use muscles and move joints in many ways for various activities. Swimming, jogging and running can develop endurance, while weight lifting and push ups augment muscle strength.

A workout must necessarily tailor tall these components. Also, before working out, you must warm your body up and prepare your muscles for the force and stress that will be exerted on it in the course of the work out. Also, while ending, you must cool-down your body, allowing your body to relax after the workout and must never overdo your exercise. A daily walk will do you good, but daily pushups will do anything but good for you. Also, subject your body to a wide variety of physical exercises, from the simplest to the most complex ones. For starters, do 2 to 3 sessions a week and as you progress, increase the frequency of exercises.

Also, you must be conscious of your diet. If you wish to lose weight and also build your physique, it would be better if the intake of calories is less. Jogging and cycling are good ways to burn calories and burn about 700 to 900 and 200 to 400 calories, respectively. Alcohol, nicotine and caffeine must be avoided. Your saturated fat intake must be lessened and you must also drink lots of water.

Being fit, of course means you must listen to your body. Your body must be allowed to change for adjusting to the changes in the exercise routines. If you experience problems like cramps or dizziness, stop exercises and consult a physician immediately and must never be discouraged. Achieving a physique of your dreams will not be done in one night.

A fit body offers not only flab free stomach and tough abs, but also a life with a lesser probability of getting illness like diabetes and cardio vascular problems. It augments the functioning of your mind and gives you better activeness and alertness of mind, more reserve energy and gives more endurance and also increases your self confidence.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 784 bicyclists were killed in 2005 while riding their bikes. In 2004, there were 725 deaths, and for the four years previous, annual bicycling deaths ranted from 629 to 732 people each year.

Statistics for bicycling injuries are not readily available, since most do not get reported.

Use the Proper Equipment

1. Be sure your bike fits you properly and is adjusted for your size.

2. Equip your bike with safety equipment: a white headlight (preferably one you can set to a flashing mode for use during the daytime to make yourself more visible), reflectors and/or reflective tape or markings, a flashing red rear light (essential for riding at night), a horn or a bell (to give audible signals to let drivers know where you are—or that you’re there at all), and mirrors on your handlebars.

3. Each time, before you ride, check to see that tires are properly inflated, that the brakes work, and that nothing is loose on your bike.

Dress For Cycling

4. Always wear a properly fitted bike helmet to protect you in case of a fall or crash. (Consider putting a mirror on your helmet, too.)

5. Wear bright, neon colors and/or reflective clothing—even during the day.

6. At night, wear a reflective jacket or vest or a safety triangle.

Plan Ahead

7. Know the rules of the road and any specific bicycling rules for your area

8. Plan to travel in slow or residential areas when possible to avoid fast-moving downtown traffic.

9. Avoid narrow roads and opt for wide roads where there is more room for bicycles and cars to maneuver if you can.

10. Always stay alert. Don’t ride with headphones or an ipod. And NEVER use your cell phone while biking!

11. Never be in a hurry. When you’re in a hurry, you can get careless or take unnecessary chances. It also makes it more likely that you could be darting in and out quickly and automobile drivers might not even see you.

When Bicycling

12. Use your headlight—even during the day—so drivers have a better chance of seeing you.

13. Use your mirrors so you know what is going on around you at all times.

14. Ride on the street with other traffic, not on the sidewalk, traveling in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic, not against it.

15. Know—and use—hand signals. Be sure to give plenty of notice in advance of when you are going to make a turn. Then be sure to look over your shoulder to be sure your path is clear before making the actual turn.

16. Be consistent and predictable so motorists know what you are going to do. Drive in a straight line. Don’t swerve, weave in and out of traffic or parked cars, or make any erratic or sudden moves.

17. Obey traffic signs, signals, and road markings and yield to pedestrians – just like any other vehicle on the roadway.

18. Use your horn or bell if you will be crossing in front of another vehicle so you give an audible signal—it’s more likely to get the other motorists attention.

19. Make eye contact with motorists if possible, so you know that they see you.

Drive Defensively

20. Watch for hazards such as pot holes, puddles, loose gravel, spare car parts, drain grates, rocks, litter or garbage, parked cars opening their doors, pets running loose, and other vehicles.

21. Ride to the left of the parking lane to avoid hitting a car door that opens unexpectedly in front of you.

22. At a red light, stop behind another car. Do not pull up next to the first car at the light where you will be in the blind spot and risk getting hit if the car makes a right turn and the driver doesn’t know you’re there.

23. When you follow a vehicle that is moving slow, be patient. It may be getting ready to make a turn. Don’t try to rush past it or get up beside it in the driver’s blind spot.

Choosing my first bicycle. What should i look for?

I am interesting in buying a bicycle for leisure and fitness purposes. I am looking for the comfort and speed of a road bike mixed with the sturdiness of a mountain bike, so something hybrid. Something that can be used to go around town but on the weekends can go wild with. Finally, I am willing to drop $400-500 for one. Can anyone give me suggestions or tips?

Sounds like you know what you want already, so check out the various brands, generic estrace cream and find out what they have in your price range, then go to the shops and test ride the ones you are interested in.

If you want to ride off road make sure your tyres aren’t too slick.

I wouldn’t think that a road bike is particularly comfortable by the way, since it’s primary concern is speed, it’s designed for a riding posture that minimises air resistance, with your spine leant a long way forward, for comfort you need a bike that allows an upright spine.

Also if your thinking of riding down anything particularly steep off road, I would reccomend making sure the frame shape allows the seet to be lowered quite a lot. So that you can shift your weight back a lot, and also so you can jump off the back easily if you need to

Also tell the people at the bike shop what sort of riding you intend to do they would be able to give you further advice.

I’m looking for a good training plan that combines running and cycling.?

Does anyone know of a good book or website that might help me? I can find plenty of plans for one sport or the other, but I am having trouble finding one for both. I’m not really looking to do a duathlon, but I would like to go out on a weekend and run a 5-10K, or ride in a 30-60 mile bike ride. I would love to find a weekly plan that would consistently keep me in shape for both, and not focus too much on one area while neglecting the other.

I am basically back to a beginner’s level of fitness. So, I am looking for something that starts off easy and builds gradually.

It may not be a book, but the advice I give you is to meet some local triathlon participants through clubs or messageboards and ask them in detail how they train to do both.

You can even look for someone who is in your fitness range so the plan isn’t too daunting.

I found someone a work to ask about this very thing and have been combining the two easily with their advice
