On home fitness equipment, does the “Calories Burned” counter show exaggerated numbers for marketing purposes?
A friend told me that the “Calories Burned” indicators show inflated numbers, with no basis in reality, because the manufacturer wants the consumer to think that particular machine is helping them burn lots of calories. Is this true, or a conspiracy theory?
When I 10 mg nolvadex took physics in college one of the problems was to calculate how many calories Bob burned while on a stationary bike utilizing a magnetic flywheel for resistance. This is a very straightforward calculation if you know the strength of the magnet and the speed (RPM’s) at which the disk is turning. The values I calculated were ballpark accurate with what the readouts tell me when I use a machine. Treadmills and elliptical machines are also simple. Basically you can calculate how much work is being done to move a given weight a certain distance. These numbers are very simple to calculate using basic laws of physics. I think, if anything, they’d usually be a little LOWER than the true value, as friction and equipment wear and tear will result in more energy being required to overcome uncalculated resistance. The calories burned indicator might cut some corners on how it calculates the number, but for the most part they’re pretty accurate.

I am about to buy a bike for the first time in 20 years. Help me make some decisions please…?
I’m about to buy my a bike as part of the government cyclescheme. This is mainly due to a need to improve my fitness and use my car less. It will mainly be used on normal roads but I may decide to venture further afield occassionally. I originally thought I wanted a hybrid and was looking at the Marin Kentfield or the Ridgeback Velocity. I’m starting to think that if I do decide to get a bit more adventurous then these choices could be a bit restrictive and maybe a mountain bike would be better. Any thoughts, help, suggestions or advice would be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The hybrid is great if your cycling is going to be paved roads, dirt roads, and light trail riding. If you meant o ride heavy trail rides then the mountain bike would be the better choice. The gearing on the mtn bike is much lower, the bike heavier, and if you get shocks, will be much more difficult to ride on the Hybrids home terrain.
Let your riding location decide which type of bike to get!

bought a road bike thinking of switching to mountain bike?
i bought a road bike last week with the thin tires because i wanted to do a lot of road riding to try to get my fitness level higher. i have had mtn bikes in the past. my street is pretty bumpy and when the bike hits a crack in the pavement it kind of “bangs” seeing as there is no shocks. i dont plan on doing any races or triatholons… just somer distances abilify prescription assistance on the road. should i go back to a mtn bike even if im riding 20 miles a day? or stay with a road bike? thanks
The ideal solution would be to replace the wheels and/or tires with tires you can run at lower pressures- check with your local bike shop to see what they can do for you. If the roads are really bad and you’re regularly riding it with tires pumped up to 100psi, the cords in the tire can break if the wheels encounter a sufficient impact, which will result in a bubble in the tire. This has happened to me before.
As mentioned, your other option is to get a mountain bike and equip it with road tires. If it’s a comfortable fit, 20 miles a day on it won’t be a big deal.

Commuting, best bike to buy?
I need a bicycle for travelling around the city (live in Brisbane & a female bike rider). I would use it to go:
- shopping
- to university
- to friends houses
- long fitness rides and a triathlon once a year
I would ride on bike trails and roads mostly. I suppose I need a good commuting bike but also one that can be comfortable on a long ride and be fast enough to keep up with traffic.
Looking to spend between AU$700 – $1500.

Being in the bicycle industry for 40 mg paroxetine my whole life and working in it for the past 10.5 yrs and counting, of the first three answers, the third answer is best overall. Mountain bike? No. Hybrid? No. Performance Hybrid? Fitness/LIfestyle? Maybe. Recreational/Performance Road? YES.

I recommend anything like:
The 2009 Giant Avail($$) or Avail Alliance($$$) designed by women for women specifically. Your usage is exactly what these bikes were designed and made to do perfectly. They’re essentially light road racers +upright position, more comfort, fender/rack compatible and easier gearing. Limited Lifetime Warranty on frame and fork (best in industry alongside Trek, Specialized etc.).
Trek: go for equivalent WSD (womens specific design) models in road or bike path categories. Recommnd: Road category: 1.2 – 1.9WSD
